Designing customer-facing apps before the build starts
We are a founder-led UK software development company based in Droitwich, Worcestershire. Over more than 20 years of trading we have delivered in excess of 100 projects, and every client has walked away owning 100% of the code and IP we produced. Our app design services are aimed at products that end customers download, open and judge within seconds. This is a different discipline from interface design for complex business and internal systems used by trained staff, which is described in our UI and UX work. When the user is a member of the public, the interface carries the whole weight of the brand.
A clear example is our work on Floc, a cross-platform sports coaching mobile app released for iOS and Android from a single codebase, with bookings and integrated payments. The published app reached around 80% user satisfaction.
Wireframes first, because change is cheap there
The design phase begins with wireframes. These are plain layouts that show where elements sit on a screen, how a user moves from one view to the next, and what happens after a tap. There is no colour, no brand, and no polished artwork. That is deliberate. At this stage, change is cheap, and we encourage clients to redraw flows with us until the logic feels right.
From wireframes we move to prototypes. A clickable prototype behaves like the real app, with working transitions and fake data. We then run tests with real users, often recruited from the client’s expected audience. We watch them try to complete tasks such as booking a session or making a payment, and we note where they hesitate. The findings are written down and used to refine the design. We treat the design as a contract for the build, not a decorative layer. Every screen state, every error message, and every empty list is considered before development starts.
For a customer-facing app, the entry cost for the whole project sits between £10,000 and £50,000, with UK agency rates from £75 to £150 per hour. Mid range work runs £50,000 to £150,000, and larger builds go from £150,000 to over £1,000,000. Investing a portion of that in design before code reduces the risk of expensive rework.
How a clickable prototype removes expensive ambiguity
A common pattern in software builds is a slow drift between what the client pictured and what the developers built. A clickable prototype settles that gap. It shows the exact sequence of taps, the labels on buttons, and the state of a screen after a failed payment or a declined card. There is no room for conflicting imagination. A booking app that omits a clear cancellation path will generate support tickets. A prototype exposes that gap in an afternoon.
When the prototype is signed off, the engineering team works to a fixed reference. A test user spotting a missing confirmation step at mock-up stage costs a redraw, not a sprint. The commercial argument is straightforward. Design completed early costs a fraction of design corrected after the app is live and customers have already complained in reviews.
Respecting the app stores’ different conventions
Designing for iOS and Android is not a single task with two colour schemes. Apple’s human interface guidelines expect certain gesture patterns, a particular typography scale, and a strict use of system components. Google’s material approach allows more flexible navigation, broader component shapes, and a different treatment of back navigation. A UK team shipping to both stores must honour those conventions, or the app feels wrong to users and earns lower ratings. Ignoring these standards can lead to rejection during review, which delays launch and adds cost.

When design cannot save a product
There are honest limits to what design can achieve. A polished interface cannot rescue a product that nobody needs. User testing may show that participants complete tasks happily but have no reason to return, or would not pay for the convenience. In that case, the design has succeeded by revealing the truth early, before committing to the £150,000 to £1,000,000 bracket. No amount of rounded corners or smooth animation changes a lack of demand.
We encourage clients to validate underlying demand through our consulting or their own market research before full development. Design improves the shape of a solution. It does not invent a market where none exists, and we will say so plainly if the evidence points that way.

What’s the difference between UI and UX design?
UX (user experience) design is about how the product works, the flows, structure and logic that make it easy to use. UI (user interface) design is how it looks, the visual layer, components and styling. Good products need both, designed together.
Do you design and build, or just design?

How long does app design take?
A focused design phase for an MVP usually takes 2–5 weeks including research, flows and UI. Larger products take longer, but we work in iterations so you see progress early.
